The Helping Hearts
The Helping Hearts, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing help to people before, during, and after a heart transplant. It is a support group made up of volunteers who have been heart transplant recipients, their caregivers, their families, heart transplant specialists, and others interested in transplantation and furthering the goals of the group.
A benevolent fund has been set up by our organization to assist heart transplant patients in Methodist Hospital. Contributions to this fund are provided from our fund-raising endeavors and donations from supporters.
The specific and primary purpose of The Helping Hearts support group is to provide aid and reassurance prior to and subsequent to surgery for patients and their families. Such support is to be provided without regard to race, creed, gender, nationality, or religion. We visit with patients and their families so they can communicate with people who understand what they are going through.
Many times, when patients come in, they may have a long wait before their surgery. They come from other cities, states, or even other countries. This puts stress on them emotionally and financially. Often they need assistance with parking permits, accommodations, and other necessities. After transplantation, there are other issues that prevent them from returning promptly to their homes. We depend on fund raising events, donations, and volunteers to provide this assistance.
Medications are extremely important and necessary for heart transplant recipients. These medications are very expensive and are required to be taken for the rest of their lives. Many times patients need assistance to pay for them. Our fund raising events contribute to this cause.
There is much research being conducted on heart disease and new surgical procedures. This is in hope that there will be a day that heart disease will be a thing of the past. The Helping Heart fund raisers also contribute to this ongoing research.
Sponsors are an integral part of our fund raising efforts and are a major reason for our success.
The Helping Hearts, Inc. support group meets every second Tuesday of the month from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at LifeGift, located at 2510 Westridge St., Houston, TX 77054.
